Call for ideas to save Easter Island!

The other day I got an email from a friend who is staying in Easter Island. After reading his message, if you happen to have a cool idea for this problem, please tell us! I will write my ideas at the end of this post too.

With the increase of tourists and garbage in Easter Islandmany many huge rats have emerged.
The rats stopped eating from the garbage cans and are invading the farms around the island. Sweet potatoes and carrots, it's an all-you-can-eat feats for the rats now.
To stop this, farmers started making traps to kill the rats, and were able to trap 20 of them. They were all happy for a while, but after 1 week, the traps were all broken by the rats, and they know now how to evade them.
The all-you-can-eat feast has started again for the ever growing population of rats.
There are no damages done to the health of the islanders so the City and Government have not acted upon it, but if they do, they might use a lot of poison to kill the rats, which is making the farmers uneasy
because a lot of dangerous bacteria would spur out of the poisoned rat's bodies. Besides that, the poison would also contaminate the earth and damage the crops even more. Easter Island is very small so they have to be extra careful on how they maintaintheir land fertile.
Farmers are trying to kill the rats by raising many cats, but the rats are as big as the cats so this "cute" idea won't work.
So I ask you this:If you have an interesting idea that could save the island from the rats, please contact me so we can work on it.
We will be waiting with faith for a good solution.

Scientists today have found out that one of the main reasons why Easter Island people almost diminished from the Island in the past was because of rats, so this is a very serious problem.

Ideas

• As in Takao Saito's manga,Survivalhaving snakes in cages near the crops would be a solution, but come to think of it, there are no natural snakes in the Island...
• My friend Kyle's idea: Start a program called "Rats for Money". The number of rat tails persons on the island can bring in an equal amount of money. Leave the innovation to them (distribute rubber gloves).
  Very nice idea! I think there was a similar program in Okinawa or Hiroshima called "Snakes for Money"

今日は本当に良い日でしたね！このブログを書いているところでもう16人の地下作業員が
救出されました！世界に感動が広がった日だと思います。

日本にはチリ人があまりいないせいか、どこからか僕の連絡先をゲットした各報道ステーションが
僕に電話をして、現地の最新情報などを聞かれます。今朝はテレビ朝日でニュースの同時通訳も行ないました。

一人一人が救出されるとチリ人はすかさず、Chi Chi Chi, Le Le Le! Viva Chile と叫んでいますよね？
世界に映像が流れたお陰でチリ人の喜びの雄叫びが有名になっています。笑

TwitterやFacebookを通して、この掛け声の意味や言い方を聞かれたのでこの記事にまとめたいと思います。

「団結」で乗り越える2010年チリ大地震：いまの状態と支援方法

みなさまは覚えていますでしょうか、チリでこれほど大きな地震が起きたのは初めてのことではありません。いまから約50年前、1960年5月にマグニチュード9.5の巨大地震が起きました。歴史上観測された最大規模の地震でした。

その地震はあまりにも強く、22時間後その振動で日本に6メートルの津波がぶつかり142名の方々が亡くなりました。当時のチリの直接的な犠牲者も1743名で国全土が壊滅状態になりました。復興するにあたって、若者から老人まで、みな自分のことよりも隣人のサポートに専念し「団結」して乗り越えました。そのときの若者が今回、年配者として二回目の大地震を経験したのです。â�¦ Read the rest

しないこと

僕の思い込みかも知れないけれど、何か新しいことをしようとする時や考え事をしている時に、ひらめきを促すような本に出会う。 例えば、進路について考えていた時、日系アメリカ人のロバート・キヨサキの「金持ち父さん貧乏父さん」(そのときはよかったが、カラクリにも気づいた）をたまたま貰った。自分の会社を作りたいなと思っていたときは、大学の友人になんの前ぶれもなく英語版「ビジョナリーカンパニー２」をもらった。そして30人の留学生の担当になったときは「七つの習慣」のオーディオブックに巡り会った。

サモラノ学生の日本訪問

先週、日本に来日している2人の学生の通訳をすることになりました。 彼らはラオスで9ヶ月間キャッサバ芋の研究プロジェクトを終え、各国に帰る前に、この研修を企画した日本財団の会長に挨拶するため、日本に寄りました。 僕は彼ら2人と会長の面談、広報からのインタビューの通訳を行ないました。 2人共まだ若いのに、もう国レベルの農業改革やプロジェクトを予定している面白いペルー人とパナマ人なのです。
